Let Us Practice Before We Preach I am writing this letter within a short span of time from communication I sent earlier to Zonal Co-ordina- tors of the Rotary India s Covid Task Force which was copied to you. The news reports about the surge in number of cases, especially in Maharashtra and Kerala and smaller spikes in 16 other States and even in Tamil Nadu are causing us concern. Various State Governments are repeatedly issuing warnings about diluting precautionary norms such as wearing masks and observing social distancing. The reason for me writing this letter is because I am aghast to see the numerous photographs of Rotari- ans celebrating as if there was nothing called Covid few months ago. The cancellation of the physical meetings during the International Assembly and International Conven- tion this year are the messages given by our world leaders about the need to be safe and also not be car- riers of the Corona Virus to others in the community. The reports of lockdown being imposed in some districts, sealing of all borders between Karnataka and Kerala and the intention of a Government to depute marshals to weddings and events where people gather to see if they observe norms, are indications that we cannot be careless. Today Rotary leaders in India are in contact with nearly all State Governments to make Rotary a partner in the fight against Covid. We have said that our strength lies in advocacy, making people realise the need to observe social distancing norms, wearing masks and observing the standard procedures for safety as laid down by the Government. But, if news about Rotarians flouting all norms spread, can we preach to the public what we cannot follow ourselves? I realise that fellowship is the mainstay in Rotary clubs. But when we say that we can be saviours of lives, we have to demonstrate that we follow the rules. Bringing credibility to what we say will reflected by how the public see us. I request you to advise the clubs in your district to consider conducting meetings virtually for some more time. They can concentrate on developing the infrastructure required to assist in the vaccination drive. Rotary hopes to be a partner with the Government and we have to be ready now.
