Every Storm Passes: A Lesson from Rotary and the Fight Against Polio
Life is a journey filled with hope, challenges, and opportunities to grow. There are times when problems seem overwhelming and we wonder if they will ever end. Yet one truth remains unchanged: every storm eventually passes.
One of the greatest examples of this comes from Rotary’s fight against polio.
In 1988, when the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched, nearly 1,000 children around the world were being paralysed by polio every day—about 350,000 cases a year. India alone accounted for almost 600 of those daily cases. To many, the dream of a polio-free world seemed impossible.
But Rotary refused to accept the impossible.
With determination, perseverance, and partnerships involving governments, WHO, UNICEF, CDC, the Gates Foundation, and millions of volunteers, the world kept moving forward. India, once considered the most difficult country to conquer polio, has not reported a single case of wild poliovirus since January 2011—an achievement that stands as one of the greatest public health successes in history.
This extraordinary journey teaches us a powerful lesson. The biggest obstacles are not overcome overnight. They are conquered through patience, persistence, teamwork, and an unwavering belief that success is possible.
The same is true in our own lives. Every challenge we face today is temporary. Every setback carries a lesson. Every difficulty builds resilience and prepares us for greater achievements tomorrow.
Rotary has demonstrated this time and again. Whether it is eradicating polio, restoring sight, providing clean water, educating children, or saving young lives through paediatric heart surgeries, every great project looked daunting in the beginning. Yet, step by step, they became inspiring success stories because people chose action over despair.
So, whenever life feels difficult, remember Rotary’s lesson from polio eradication. Never judge tomorrow by today’s challenges. Keep your faith strong, your purpose clear, and your determination unwavering.
