Service as a Way of Life

After more than five decades in Rotary, I am often asked what has kept me inspired for so many years.

My answer is simple: nothing gives greater fulfilment than serving another human being.

The smiles we bring, the lives we transform, and the hope we create through service are the greatest rewards one can receive. Service is not merely something we do; it is a way of life that gives meaning and purpose to our journey.

Rotary provides a unique platform for people from every profession and background to serve humanity. Through our time, talent, and treasure, we can collectively create lasting change. A child receiving a new chance at life, a student getting an opportunity to learn, or a family finding hope in difficult times—these are the moments that define the true spirit of service.

Service not only transforms the lives of those we help; it transforms us as well. It teaches humility, compassion, and gratitude, and reminds us that we are all connected.

In Indian tradition, Seva—selfless service—is considered one of the highest forms of devotion. When we dedicate ourselves to something greater than ourselves, we discover a joy that no material achievement can provide.

Today, the world needs compassion and cooperation more than ever. The challenges before humanity are immense, but when people come together with a spirit of service, extraordinary things become possible.

This is the strength of Rotary—a global family united by one simple belief: Service Above Self.

After all these years, I have realised one timeless truth:

The happiest people are not those who have accumulated the most, but those who have contributed the most.

Our true legacy is not the positions we held or the possessions we leave behind. It is the lives we touched, the hope we created, and the difference we made.

Service is not an obligation.

It is a privilege.

It is a way of life.
