ANATOMY OF SERVICE Itis ironical that in spite of progress in almost all sectors of life, there is an increasing need for assistance to the needy because there is a progressive increase in the number of people who are deprived of many of the essentials of life. The solution of this problem is not an increase in the number of organizations that offer Service but in the reduction of the need that are unsolved. It is here that Rotary can make its mark. It is aptly said Give a man a fish and it will satisfy his hunger for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will tackle his hunger for his life time It is here that Rotary can reach the community how to make a living. Vocational Service, therefore, assumed great importance where Rotary participates in programmes that help men and women leam some vocation to be able to sustain themselves. Vocational Training Institutes impart skills to those who enroll themselves for such programmes and Rotary can subsidize the cost needed for such training. Once trained, Rotary can also help the needy with ensuring some financial inputs to rehabilitate the trained. Service therefore, is imparting dignity to the communities to pursue a vocation they want. ASHOK MAHAJAN TRUSTEE THE ROTARY FOUNDATION (2009-13) DIRECTOR- ROTARY INTERNATIONAL (2007-09)
