Membership Development All these decades many people have spoken about various strategies to increase the membership in Rotary worldwide. Rotary, from the very beginning, focused on nurturing human consciousness. This is why the progress in membership development has been slow. Rotarians are like a swarm of bees going all over the place, but still going in one direction. In this movement no one can give only one reason why someone should join Rotary. There was always a debate since there were as many reasons why someone joined Rotary as there were Rotarians. People involved in membership development activity had to explain. Rotary is not a philosophy, it is a seeking for higher development of oneself. So what is that one important skill that Rotarians should have if they have to attract others into the fold? They must have the skill to stir up the humanity within people. This is the best way to attract people into Rotary stir up their humanity. So if stirring up humanity is the technique that will increase membership in Rotary, then you can't do it to a crowd. You have to do it one at a time and it is a continuing process. If you want to evoke humanity within others you need many more people who are dedicated to that task. Since there are not enough people in the movement to stir up the humanity within others, there is a slackening in the membership development programme. Every Rotarian who managed to bring in more people into the movement did it on his own. He did it on his own clarity of perception and people who saw the clarity joined the movement. If Rotarians, who cannot stir up this consciousness within others, talk about membership development, then people will not be attracted to join the movement.
