Service Service to Humanity is Service to God they say. There are so many ways in which you can serve the society. Rotary is a service organisation. People who join the movement are told that conducting some project qualifies as service. Indian philosophy has beautifully explained how an action becomes a service through the following example. When devotion enters food, food becomes prasad (God's gift of food). When devotion enters hunger, hunger becomes a fast (a form of penance). When devotion enters water, water becomes sanctified as holy water. When devotion enters travel, travel becomes a pilgrimage. When devotion enters music, music becomes kirtan' (song in praise of God). When devotion enters a house, house becomes a temple. When devotion enters actions, actions become services. Sages have said that one with a spotless heart serves the society by his very conduct. So, the greatest service activity is to have a pure heart and not to carry malice and hatred in the heart. If this quality is not there, then any other superficial act of doing a project for the welfare of a community will only be constituted as a action and not a service, Everybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love" said Martin Luther King. I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy , said Rabindranath Tagore. All great leaders and thinkers have added the most important ingredient of devotion when it comes to doing service to society. Serving others with a pure heart is a stimulating experience. It is a way to live fully. Persons who join a Rotary club must first be taught to think, "How can I be useful to the society? Of what service can I be?" The common perception that Rotary promotes friendship through service has really not had the desired effect since we are seeing clubs and members breaking up over petty differences. Hence, the meaning of service must always be linked to devotion and pure heart. Friendship will follow since people with good heart will have no malice towards one another and soon the community problems will be taken care of. Rotary teaches that every action of us in our daily routine must be act, which will qualify as a service. When devotion enters work, work becomes sacred. Service is not something you do in your spare time. Finally, when devotion enters a man, man becomes human and service is a human concept.
