GRATITUDE—And Congratulations to the Awardees.
Introduction.
The Rotary Awards for Vocational Excellence were commence in our District in 1978 by the Rotary District Governor late Dr Badar Maskati through the District Vocational Service Committee. The concept was accepted by the clubs in our District and in subsequent years as an integral part of their second Avenue of Service- Vocational Service Program. The first Awards were presented to three individuals at the 1979 District Conference in Mumbai at the hands of Mother Taresa .
Aims
The aims of the Award are:
To recognise VOCATIONAL EXCELLENCE of the highest order and to honor outstanding contribution by individuals or small teams of individuals for significant advancement in their vocational field .
To inspire further enthusiasm and to give added reward to the exceptional achievers.
To set an example to others, particularly youth, of the need to strive for VOCATIONAL EXCELLENCE
Service above self is the motto of Rotary. In a way service is considered as soul of Rotary. But go through the objects of Rotary and you will realize that maintaining high ethical standards in your vocation and leveraging members vocation as a means to serve the society is one of the most important aspect of Rotary. Service is not limited in community but also in workplace and around the globe. Incidentally first community project began in Chicago due to Rotary Club of Chicago’s endeavor to help members in their vocation.
Awards are recognitions expressed and are one of the best ways to say “WELL DONE “ and “THANK YOU VERY MUCH “ .
Lord CHAMBESLAIN was the Chief guest at an Award function like this to recognize the excellent work of a common Britisher who went out of his way to save a community threatened by calamity.
When asked why he consented to be the Chief Guest at that function to recognize a common individual? He said “ Great words by good people are more vital than good words by Great people. I always feel honored and privileged to be amongst them when precious achievements are recognized and felicitated by Unprecious people-like me “
Today I am in the shoes of Lord CHAMBESLAIN as I realize that an unprecious person like me is present here to recognize the precious work of these individuals .
Recognition and Rewards are an integral part of our life . They spur others and us to better deeds and better dedication.
Frank Jones was a great football player and his entire team including the coach depended upon his defensive play to block the goals .
In a championship match , his team was lagging behind and a great effort was needed to come out on top . Frank , though injured , went into action and even at the risk of big injury, not only managed to ward off the opposition ‘s attacks but to pass the ball to a runner who picked up his pass and ultimately scored a goal to even the scores . In the penalty shootout, he saved at least two sure goals and his mates did the rest . His team had won .
Frank expected a big pat on his back but none came . He approached the coach and asked “ YOU SAW ME PLAY DID NOT YOU ? “
“YES” said the coach.
“ How come you did not say any thing about it ? “
The coach replied “ Sure your defense was superlative but then you are always a great defender and I figured I did not have to tell you “
Well replied Frank “ if you ever want to succeed again , you will have to .
RECOGNITION AWAKENES SUPERLATIVE POWER OF WORK , COMMITMENT AND SUCCESS.
“ Man May respond to tangible things but his response to recognition is much more “. And people are the source of greatness in any field . In the world of work , all resources— except Human Resources — stand under the law of mechanics — Never having an out put greater than the sum of their input . Man alone can produce through motivated creativity an out put greater than the sum of his inputs . It is in this light that Awards get their importance. These Awards are meant for those who have performed more than what was expected out of them .
Rotary’ s way of Say “THANK YOU “ and “WELL DONE “ is only through recognition and reward . It is imperative to recognize and reward all those who make a difference to all their activities and services. The final thank will certainly come from all those who benefit from the services rendered by all these individuals . Yes , many a times the community may not know who has done more than expected, it is left to the leadership of Local Rotary Club to convey sincere gratitude to the men and women who sacrificed for their projects .
LET ROTARY BE NOT STINGY IN RECOGNIZING THE EFFORTS AND SACRIFICE OF THOSE WHO ARE REAL HEROES AND HEROINES OF THE SCRIPT OF SERVICE.
